Ventura García-Sancho e Ibarrondo was an important person in Spanish politics. He was born in Mexico City, Mexico, on April 20, 1837. He later moved to Spain and became a Spanish nobleman and politician. People often knew him by his wife's title, the Marquess of Aguilar de Campoo.

Ventura García-Sancho held several important jobs. He served twice as the Minister of State, which is like being the main foreign minister for a country. He was also the Mayor of Madrid from 1899 to 1900. He passed away in Madrid, Spain, on July 20, 1914.

Early Life and Family

Ventura Crisóforo Domingo Ignacio García-Sancho e Ibarrondo was born in Mexico City. His parents were José Marcial García-Sancho y Sánchez-Leñero and María de la Trinidad de Ibarrondo y Maruri. Both of his parents came from well-known families in Guadalajara, Mexico, who had Spanish roots.

When Ventura was young, his family moved to Bordeaux, France. His grandparents on his mother's side had lived there before. After his mother died in 1846, Ventura started spending a lot of time in Spain. He stayed with his grandfather, José Ventura García-Sancho y Moreno de Tejada, who was from Lumbreras, Spain.

Marriage and Children

Ventura García-Sancho married María del Pilar de Zavala in Madrid on June 2, 1861. She was the 20th Marchioness of Aguilar de Campoo. Her father was Juan de Zavala, the 1st Marquess of Sierra Bullones. Through this marriage, Ventura became a Grandee of Spain, which is a very high rank of nobility in Spain.

Ventura and María del Pilar had two daughters:

  • María del Pilar García-Sancho y Zavala (1864-1916). She inherited many important titles, including Duchess of Nájera and Marchioness of Aguilar de Campoo. She married Leopoldo Travesedo y Fernández-Casariego.
  • María del Milagro García-Sancho y Zavala (1874-1959). She became the 15th Marchioness of Montealegre. She married Antonio Morenés y García-Alessón first, and then Francisco de Urruela y Lara.

Important Roles and Awards

Ventura García-Sancho held many important positions and received several awards for his service.

Some of his key roles included:

  • Count of Consuegra: This was a noble title given to him.
  • Mayordomo Mayor of the Queen: A very high-ranking position in the royal household, overseeing the Queen's personal staff.
  • Caballerizo Mayor of the Queen: Another important role in the royal household, in charge of the Queen's horses and carriages.
  • Tutor and Chief of Staff of Infanta Cristina: He helped educate and manage the affairs of Princess Cristina.
  • Chief of Staff of Infanta María Teresa: He also managed the affairs of Princess María Teresa.

He also received many prestigious awards from different countries:

  • Knight of the Sovereign Order of Malta.
  • Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Isabel la Católica (Spain, 1893).
  • Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Carlos III (Spain).
  • Knight of the Collar of the Order of Carlos III (Spain, 1908).
  • Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Légion d'Honneur (France).
  • Knight Grand Cross of the Imperial Order of the Iron Crown (Austria-Hungary).
  • Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Christ (Portugal).
  • Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold (Belgium).

Ventura García-Sancho also served as the Minister of State twice:

  • From April 18, 1900, to March 6, 1901.
  • From December 16, 1904, to January 27, 1905.
