The Venturi mask, also known as an air-entrainment mask, is a special medical device used in hospitals. It helps patients get a specific amount of oxygen when they need help breathing. A doctor named Moran Campbell invented this mask at McMaster University Medical School.

Before the Venturi mask, oxygen was sometimes given only for short periods. Dr. Campbell wanted a better way. He created the Venturi mask to give a steady and very exact amount of oxygen. This was a big improvement for patient care.

How Venturi Masks Are Used

Venturi masks are used to give a precise amount of oxygen, which doctors call the FIO2 (Fraction of Inspired Oxygen). This means the exact percentage of oxygen a person breathes in.

Many of these masks have different colors. Each color shows how much oxygen flow is needed to give a certain FIO2. Other masks have a part that you can turn. This part changes how much air mixes with the oxygen. This helps control the oxygen concentration.

Sometimes, these masks are used with special devices called nebulizers. Nebulizers add moisture to the air and oxygen. The Venturi mask system makes sure that the oxygen level stays steady. It provides more air than a person can breathe in quickly.

Why Exact Oxygen Levels Matter

Giving an exact amount of oxygen is very important for some patients. This is especially true for people with long-term lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). For these patients, their body's signal to breathe is different. It relies on low oxygen levels, which is called "hypoxic drive."

If these patients get too much oxygen, it can be risky. It might make them breathe slower. This can lead to too much carbon dioxide building up in their body. In serious cases, it could make them lose consciousness or even be very dangerous.

How Venturi Masks Work

The Venturi mask works using a principle called "jet mixing." Imagine a fast stream of oxygen coming out of a small opening. As this fast-moving oxygen meets the still air around it, it pulls the air along. This is similar to how a jet engine works.

This mixing pulls a predictable amount of air into the oxygen flow. This allows the mask to deliver a very precise and constant concentration of oxygen to the patient. It's a clever way to make sure patients get just the right amount of oxygen they need.
