Vera Grabe's Journey

Vera Grabe's parents moved to Colombia from Germany. After being part of the M-19 group, she returned to normal life. This happened because of a special agreement called a peace accord. This agreement allowed the group members to stop fighting and rejoin society without being punished by the government.

She studied a lot! She earned a master's degree in history from the University of the Andes. She also got a doctorate degree from the University of Granada in Spain. A doctorate is a very high university degree. Her studies focused on peace, conflict, and democracy.

From M-19 to Politics

After the peace agreement, the M-19 group formed a political party. It was called the M-19 Democratic Alliance. Vera Grabe became a politician with this new party. She was elected to the Colombian Congress. First, she served as a Representative. Then, she became a Senator of Colombia.

In 2002, she ran for a very important position. She was the vice presidential candidate for Luis Eduardo Garzón. They were part of the Social and Political Front. A vice presidential candidate is someone who runs for vice president.

Working for Peace and Rights

Vera Grabe has done many important jobs. She worked for the Embassy of Colombia in Spain. There, she focused on human rights. This means she helped protect people's basic rights.

She also led an organization called Observatorio para la Paz (Observatory for Peace) from 1998 to 1999. This type of organization is often called an NGO, which stands for Non-Governmental Organization. She has also been a professor and an editor. Most importantly, she is known as a strong supporter of peace.

In December 2023, the Colombian government chose her for a big role. She became the main negotiator with another group, the National Liberation Army (ELN). Her job is to help find peaceful solutions.
