Vera's Early Life and Education
Vera Sandberg grew up in a place called Långasjönäs in Blekinge, a province in Sweden. She was a very determined student. In 1914, she decided to study at Chalmers University of Technology. This was a big step because, at that time, it was mostly men who studied engineering. Vera was the only woman among 500 male students!
Becoming Sweden's First Female Engineer
Vera worked hard and focused on her studies in chemistry. Her dedication paid off. In 1917, she successfully earned her degree. This made her the first woman in Sweden to become a qualified engineer. It was a huge achievement that opened doors for many women who came after her.
Vera's Engineering Career
After graduating, Vera started her career right away. She worked at several different companies. One of her first jobs was at AB Skandinaviska Raffineriet in Partille. She also worked at Oljefabriken i Karlshamn, which was an oil factory.
Working in Different Industries
Vera's skills were needed in various places. She also took on roles at Helsingborgs Gummifabrik, a rubber factory in Helsingborg. Later, she worked at Sieverts Kabelverk in Sundbyberg, a company that made cables. Her career showed her wide range of engineering abilities.
Family Life and Later Years
In 1937, Vera married another engineer named Ragnar Adolf Resare. For several years, they lived in Storfors. During this time, Vera spent more time focusing on her family. However, she remained involved in business. Until 1965, she was a part-owner of Långasjönäs Pappersbruk, a paper mill, and regularly served on its board.
Vera Sandberg's Lasting Legacy
Vera Sandberg's pioneering spirit is still remembered today. Many places and things have been named after her to honor her achievements.
- Chalmersspexet Vera: This is a special kind of student theater performance, called a spex, put on by the students at Chalmers University of Technology.
- Vera Sandbergs Allé: This is an avenue or street in Gothenburg.
- Chalmer's Hot-Air Balloon: One of the hot-air balloons belonging to the Chalmers Ballong Corps is named after her.
- Veras Gräsmatta: This means "Vera's Lawn." It's the name of a conference room in the student union building at Chalmers.
- Chalmers Vera Team: This is a team from Chalmers that competes in the Eco Marathon, a competition focused on energy-efficient vehicles.
- Vera Sandbergs gata: This is a street in her hometown of Ljungby.
In June 2019, a special statue was revealed in her honor. It was placed on Vera Sandberg Avenue in Gothenburg. The statue was created by a sculptor named Jan Cardell and was unveiled by Chalmers University of Technology. It serves as a permanent reminder of Vera Sandberg's incredible contributions.
