Vergara is a small and friendly city located in the eastern part of Uruguay. It is part of the Treinta y Tres Department. This city is known for its quiet charm and interesting history.

Where is Vergara Located?

Vergara is found in a special spot in Uruguay. It sits between two important roads: Route 18 to its northwest and Route 91 to its southeast. The city is about 54 kilometers (about 33 miles) northeast of Treinta y Tres, which is the main city of the department. A small stream called Arroyo Parao flows along the edge of Vergara, adding to its natural beauty.

How Vergara Started

The story of Vergara begins with a person named José Fernandes Vergara. Between 1877 and 1887, he bought land from his sister-in-law, Luisa Ignacia Saravia. This land was meant to become a new town. At first, the area was called Parao because it was right next to the Arroyo Parao stream.

In April 1891, the land was carefully measured and divided by a surveyor named Manuel Coronel. After this, José Vergara started selling pieces of land to people. Many immigrants, especially from Italy, began to arrive in the area between 1890 and 1900. They helped the community grow.

Over time, the small group of houses grew bigger. On March 10, 1903, this growing settlement was officially recognized as a "Pueblo," which means a village, by a special law (Ley Nº 2.788). Much later, on December 13, 1994, Vergara's status was upgraded again. It became a "Ciudad," meaning a city, by another law (Ley Nº 16.668).
