Vergílio António Ferreira (born in Melo, Gouveia, on January 28, 1916 – died in Lisbon on March 1, 1996) was a very important Portuguese writer and teacher. He wrote many books, essays, and diaries. His work is a big part of Portuguese literature.
His writing often explored two main styles:
- Neorealism: This style focused on showing real life, especially the lives of ordinary people and social issues.
- Existentialism: This style looked at big questions about life, like what it means to be human and the choices we make.
In 1992, Vergílio Ferreira won the Camões Prize. This is a very special award given to great writers who use the Portuguese language. Today, a literary prize named after him is given out every year in Gouveia. This helps keep his memory alive in Portuguese literature.

Vergílio Ferreira's Life Story
Vergílio Ferreira started studying at a seminary when he was 10 years old. A seminary is a school where people train to become priests. He left the seminary when he was 16.
Later, he went to the University of Coimbra to continue his studies. His experiences at the seminary became the inspiration for his most famous book, Manhã Submersa. This title means Misty Morning or Submerged Morning. The book was published in 1953. It was even made into a film in 1980. Another one of his well-known novels is Aparição, which came out in 1959.
Vergílio Ferreira spent most of his life working as a teacher. He taught in many different places across Portugal.
