Vermont Terrace is a special old house located at 63-65 Lower Fort Street in Millers Point, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. It is considered important because of its history and unique style. This building is officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register, which means it is protected. It was added to this list on April 2, 1999.

What is the History of Vermont Terrace?

Millers Point is one of the very first places in Australia where European settlers built homes. It was also a busy area for ships and sea activities. Vermont Terrace is one of two houses built around the time of Australia's Federation. This was when the different Australian colonies joined together to form one country.

What Does Vermont Terrace Look Like?

Vermont Terrace is a two-storey house with four bedrooms. It also has an attic (a room at the top, under the roof) and a basement (a room underground). It was built in an early Federation Arts and Crafts style.

Key Features of the House

  • Brickwork: The house is made of different coloured bricks, called polychrome face brick. This means the bricks themselves have various colours, not just painted on.
  • Roof: It has a steep roof with a triangular shape at the front, called a gable.
  • Chimney: There is a tall chimney on the roof.
  • Decorations: You can see fancy brick designs around the doors and windows. The window on the ground floor also has a decorative stone sill.
  • Materials: Besides bricks, the house uses slate for the roof and cast iron lace for decoration. It also has a spear fence.
  • Condition: The outside of the house is in good condition.

How Has the House Changed Over Time?

Some of the wooden parts on the outside of the house have been changed or updated since it was first built.

Why is Vermont Terrace a Heritage Site?

Vermont Terrace is important because it is a great example of an early Federation-style house made with different coloured bricks. It helps make the street look special and historic.

Part of a Bigger Historic Area

This house is part of the Millers Point Conservation Area. This whole area is very old and still looks much like it did in the past. It includes homes and public spaces that date back to the 1830s. It shows how people adapted the land in the 1800s.

Vermont Terrace was officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999.
