Early Life and Education
Veronica Lazăr was born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1938. She studied at the Caragiale Academy of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography. She also earned a degree in psychology.
Moving to Italy
Lazăr performed in Romanian theater plays. She left her home country to escape a political system called communism. In 1965, she moved to Italy. She quickly learned Italian in just a few weeks. She had planned to move to the United States or Israel. However, she fell in love with the city of Rome and decided to stay.
In Rome, she met and married the Italian actor Adolfo Celi. They had two children together. Their son, Leonardo Celi, became a director. Their daughter, Alessandra Celi, also became an actress.
Acting Career
Veronica Lazăr started her film career in 1972. Her first movie role was in Last Tango in Paris. She played the deceased wife of a character played by Marlon Brando. She also worked with director Bernardo Bertolucci in other films. These included La Luna (1979) and The Sheltering Sky (1990).
Horror Film Roles
Lazăr is well-known for her roles in horror films. She played the scary character Mater Tenebrarum in Dario Argento's movie Inferno (1980). She also appeared as Martha in Lucio Fulci's The Beyond (1981). Later, she worked with Dario Argento again in The Stendhal Syndrome (1996).

Her other movies included Identification of a Woman (1982) by Michelangelo Antonioni. She also appeared in My Sister and I (1987) and Towards Evening (1990). Later films were The Prince's Manuscript (2000) and Ginostra (2002).
