Adolfo Celi was an Italian actor and director. He was born in Curcuraci, Sicily, on July 27, 1922. Adolfo Celi acted in almost 100 movies. He was often known for playing bad guys from different countries. Many people remember him best as Emilio Largo in the 1965 James Bond movie Thunderball. He even made fun of his Largo role in another movie called OK Connery.

Life and Career

Adolfo Celi started acting in movies after World War II. He moved to Brazil and helped start a theater group called the Teatro Brasileiro de Comédia. He was a very successful stage actor in both Argentina and Brazil. In the 1950s, he directed three movies in South America. One of these was a popular Brazilian film called Tico-Tico no Fubá in 1952.

Celi became famous again when he played a villain in the movie That Man from Rio. This movie was very popular. Because of this, he was chosen to play Major Battaglia in the 1965 World War II movie Von Ryan's Express. In this film, he acted alongside Frank Sinatra.

This led him to his most famous role as Largo in Thunderball. He was also known for playing Ralph Valmont in the action movie Danger: Diabolik. Another important role was Don Vito Tressoldi in the film Hired to Kill (1972).

Adolfo Celi also starred in some Italian comedy movies. These included Amici Miei and Brancaleone alle Crociate. He worked on television too. He played the famous Italian-American police officer Joseph Petrosino in a mini-series called Petrosino (1972). He also played the Baron of Carini in another popular mini-series, La Baronessa di Carini (1975).

Celi spoke many languages very well. Besides his native Italian and Sicilian, he could speak English, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese. Even though he was good at English, his strong accent meant that other actors often spoke his lines for him in English movies. However, in the 1981 BBC show The Borgias, Celi played Rodrigo Borgia and used his own voice.

Personal Life

Adolfo Celi was married three times. He passed away from a heart attack in Siena, Italy, in 1986. His daughter, Alessandra Celi, is also an actress.
