Veronica americana, also known as American brooklime or American speedwell, is a plant that grows naturally in cool and cold parts of Asia and North America. You can often find it growing near streams and in wet, low-lying areas.
This plant is a herbaceous perennial, which means it's a plant that has soft, green stems (not woody like a tree) and lives for more than two years. Its stems can grow from about 10 to 100 centimeters long. They are smooth and have no hairs.

What American Brooklime Looks Like
American brooklime has pretty, soft violet flowers that grow in clusters at the end of its stems or along the stem where the leaves meet. Its leaves are usually between 1.5 and 8 centimeters long. They are much longer than they are wide, smooth, and have short stems that attach them to the main plant. The edges of the leaves can be slightly jagged or almost smooth.
How to Tell It Apart from Other Plants
Sometimes, people might confuse American brooklime with plants from the mint family, like Scutellaria (which is called skullcap). However, there's an easy way to tell them apart! Plants in the mint family have stems that are square-shaped, meaning they have four flat sides. Veronica species, like American brooklime, have stems that are round. So, if you feel the stem, you'll know the difference!
Uses of American Brooklime
American brooklime is a useful plant that people have used for a long time, both as food and as a medicine.
Eating American Brooklime
This plant is full of good nutrients and is said to taste a lot like watercress. If the water where it's growing is clean and safe, you can eat the whole plant, except for the roots, without cooking it. It can be a fresh addition to salads or other dishes.
Medicinal Uses
Historically, American brooklime has also been used for its medicinal properties. People believed it could help with various health issues, though it's important to remember that using plants for medicine should always be done carefully and with proper knowledge.
