Vesilahti is a small town, also called a municipality, in Finland. It is located in the Pirkanmaa region. Vesilahti is southwest of Tampere, which is the main city in the region.
About 4,000 people live in Vesilahti. The larger Tampere metropolitan area has around 417,000 people. Vesilahti is the 181st largest municipality in Finland by population.
The total area of Vesilahti is 353.94 square kilometres (136.66 sq mi). A part of this area, 52.99 km2 (20.46 sq mi), is water. The number of people living per square kilometer is 14.85 inhabitants per square kilometre (38.5/sq mi).
The official language spoken in Vesilahti is Finnish. The name "Vesilahti" means "water bay" in Finnish.
What is Vesilahti Known For?
Vesilahti became well-known because of a story about a "pink house." A local person, Katri Hakola, painted her house pink. The local government, called the municipality, did not like the color. They told her she would have to pay a fine of 5,000 € if she did not change the color.
Later, the municipality agreed that she only needed to make a small change to the color. They also decided not to make her pay the fine. This event caused a lot of discussion online. Many people thought the municipality was being too strict.
