Vespers Rising is an exciting adventure book. It's part of The 39 Clues series, which also includes card games and online activities. This book helps connect the first 39 Clues series to the next one, called Cahills vs. Vespers.

Many famous authors worked on this book, including Rick Riordan, Peter Lerangis, Gordon Korman, and Jude Watson. It was first released on April 5, 2011. Unlike most other books in the series, its title page shows dots instead of a picture of a globe.

What Happens in the Story

This book tells four different stories that are all connected. Each part takes place in a different time period. They explain the history of the Cahill family and their enemies, the Vespers.

Gideon Cahill's Secret, 1507

The first part of the story goes back to the year 1507. It tells about Gideon Cahill and his friend, Damien Vesper. At this time, a terrible sickness called the Black Death was spreading across Europe. Gideon created a special formula with 39 ingredients, hoping it could help people.

Gideon let Damien Vesper stay on his family's island to escape the sickness. But Damien wanted Gideon's formula for himself, not to help others, but for power. Gideon realized Damien's plan. He gave a part of the formula to each of his four children: Luke, Jane, Thomas, and Katherine. He told them to leave the island quickly.

That night, Damien Vesper came looking for the formula. To stop him, Gideon caused an explosion in his laboratory. The house caught fire, but Gideon's wife, Olivia, and their four children all survived. The children started blaming each other for the fire and split into two groups. Olivia was left alone, but she promised to reunite her family with the help of her unborn daughter, Madeleine.

Madeleine Cahill's Journey, 1526

Years later, Madeleine Cahill had to run away from home. The Vespers attacked her house, and her mother disappeared. Madeleine eventually found Luke, her brother, and became a governess for his son.

Luke found a ring that belonged to Gideon and asked Madeleine about it. She told him she was his sister. But Luke didn't believe her. He thought she was working with the Vespers and ordered her to be arrested. Madeleine managed to escape. She then tried to find the ring, knowing it had a "dark past."

Luke later found Damien Vesper, who now had the ring. Luke attacked Damien, wanting to get revenge for his father. But Luke failed and was believed to have died. His son found a note nearby that warned: "Beware the Madrigals."

Grace Cahill's Mission, 1942

In 1942, a thirteen-year-old girl named Grace was having a tough time. She was raising her baby brother, Fiske, and her father had disappeared, and her mother had passed away. Then, she received a secret message in Morse code. It told her to go to Casablanca and find General George S. Patton. She needed to find Gideon's ring, which was hidden in a place called "bulls-eye."

Grace figured out that General Patton was a Cahill. She snuck out of her home to deliver the message herself. She met a pilot named Drago, who flew her to Casablanca in his plane, "Olga." When they arrived, Drago was hurt, but he told Grace that Olga was named after his daughter.

Grace met General Patton and gave him the message. But she became determined to find the ring herself. She found the hiding spot, but the ring was gone. Patton said he had also found it empty, but Grace noticed a small bulge in his pocket. She realized Patton was actually a Vesper! Grace quickly took the ring and returned to her family.

Amy and Dan Cahill's New Threat

Amy and Dan Cahill's lives changed when their Uncle Fiske told them that Grace's ring was hidden in Switzerland. They knew the Vespers were following them. They found a decoded message that led them to Grace's chalet in the Alps.

They found the ring, but Vesper spies attacked them. Luckily, Fiske's friend Erasmus, who was a Madrigal, helped them escape. Amy and Dan returned to Boston. They knew they had to get ready to face this new danger. The next series of books will tell how Amy and Dan must find the Vespers, because the Vespers have taken many of their cousins hostage. The Vespers want something very important, and they are willing to do anything to get it.
