The 39 Clues is an exciting series of adventure books. Many different authors worked together to write them. Some famous authors include Rick Riordan and Gordon Korman. The series tells the story of two siblings, Amy and Dan Cahill. They find out their family, the Cahills, has been very important throughout history.
The first part of the series is about Amy and Dan searching for 39 secret clues. These clues are ingredients for a special serum. This serum can make someone the most powerful person on Earth. The books became very popular after the first one, The Maze of Bones, came out in 2008. Millions of copies have been sold and translated into many languages. Scholastic Press publishes the books in the United States. Steven Spielberg bought the rights to make movies based on the series.
Contents
The Clue Hunt: Finding the 39 Clues
This first series is all about Amy and Dan Cahill. They are orphans and learn that their family has played a huge role in world history. Amy and Dan must find the clues while other Cahill relatives try to stop them. In each book, Amy, Dan, and their au pair (a helper who lives with them) Nellie travel to a new place. They also learn about a famous historical person linked to a clue.
Book 1: The Maze of Bones
The Maze of Bones is the first book. Rick Riordan wrote it, and it came out in 2008.
Amy and Dan's grandmother, Grace Cahill, changes her will before she dies. At her funeral, her lawyer gives them a choice. They can have one million dollars or join a hunt for 39 clues. Amy and Dan choose the hunt. They compete against other experienced clue hunters. These include the Holt family, Alistair Oh, the Starling Triplets, the Kabras, Jonah Wizard, and Irina Spasky.
They find a secret library in Grace's house. The house then burns down because of the Holts. Amy, Dan, Alistair, and their cat Saladin escape. They follow a clue to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. The Starling Triplets get hurt by the Holts. Amy and Dan learn that Benjamin Franklin hid a clue in Paris. They convince Nellie to go with them. In Paris, they find codes and traps. These lead them to catacombs under the city. They find the location of an old church etched into skulls. At the church, they see a painting of the four Cahill ancestors. They also find the clue wrapped around a serum vial. The Kabras steal the vial. Amy hides the paper with Dan. Dan solves the puzzle. The clue is "iron solute," which is an anagram for "resolution." They also find secret sheet music. Amy's research suggests the next clue is in Vienna, home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Book 2: One False Note
One False Note is the second book. Gordon Korman wrote it, and it was published in 2008.
On their way to Vienna, the Holts try to steal the clue. But Saladin tears it up! Luckily, Dan remembers it all. They go to Mozart's house. They sneak into the library to find Mozart's sister's diary. But Jonah Wizard has already stolen it. They steal the diary back. The diary leads them to Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace. An explosion causes a cave-in there. Amy and Dan think a mysterious man caused it. But they later find out it was Alistair Oh. They get back at him by putting a tracker on his cane.
Dan, Amy, and Nellie then go to Venice. Dan and Amy sneak into a Janus family hideout. They steal an important clue and escape. The Kabras then kidnap them. But they let them go after finding nothing. Dan and Amy had hidden the clue in a pillow on a boat. They get the clue back and sneak into a museum. Ian and Natalie Kabra attack them. They play Mozart's first harpsichord with the clue. The clue is pages from Nannerl's diary. The fifth note sets off a trap, knocking Ian out. Natalie gets hit by a dart. Dan and Amy play the music correctly. They find the second clue: tungsten. They also find Japanese swords, hinting at their next stop.
Book 3: The Sword Thief
The Sword Thief is the third book. Peter Lerangis wrote it, and it came out in 2009.
The tungsten swords lead Amy, Dan, and Nellie to Japan. They look for a clue linked to the Japanese warrior Toyotomi Hideyoshi. They team up with Alistair Oh and the Kabras. They follow clues to Korea. They stay at Alistair's house. The Kabras have a strange coin they think is a clue. A book in Alistair's secret library leads them to Pukhansan mountain. They find a cave entrance using the coin. Inside is Hideyoshi's treasure and the third clue: gold. Dan solves an anagram and tricks the Kabras. The Kabras escape and trap everyone else in the cave. Alistair seems dead, but he faked it. After escaping, Dan, Amy, and Nellie head to Egypt, as the anagram hinted.
Book 4: Beyond the Grave
Beyond the Grave is the fourth book. Jude Watson wrote it, and it was published in 2009.
Dan, Amy, and Nellie arrive at the Hotel Excelsior in Egypt. It's a stronghold built by Bae Oh, Alistair's uncle. Bae finds and traps them. Nellie finds and frees them. Jonah Wizard later traps them on a deserted island on the Nile River. Local fishermen save them and take them back to Egypt. They find the fourth clue: half a gram of myrrh. They find it through a statue Grace left them. They barely escape with help from Nellie and Saladin.
Book 5: The Black Circle
The Black Circle is the fifth book. Patrick Carman wrote it, and it came out in 2009.
Dan and Amy get a message from "NRR" and go to Russia. There, another hint from NRR leads them to a credit card and fake passports. These belonged to their dead parents. NRR says she is Nataliya Ruslanova Radova. She is the daughter of the last Romanov, a Cahill. She escaped to live quietly. A blood problem stops her from joining the clue hunt. Amy and Dan make a deal with the Holts. They find a stronghold. It reveals the next clue: Amber.
Book 6: In Too Deep
In Too Deep is the sixth book. Jude Watson wrote it, and it was published in 2009.
Dan and Amy go to Sydney, Australia. They want to learn what their parents knew about the 39 Clues. They meet their dad's cousin, Shepard Trent. They find out that Isabel Kabra, Ian and Natalie's mother, has joined the hunt. Isabel tries to feed Amy to sharks, but Hamilton Holt stops her. The siblings survive Isabel's second attack. They follow a clue to Krakatau, a volcano area. There, they meet Alistair. Isabel sets their hut on fire. Irina Spasky dies saving Amy, Dan, and Alistair. After the fire, Alistair shows them a message from Robert Cahill Henderson. It reveals the clue: water. Near the end of the book, they start to think Nellie is spying on them.
Book 7: The Viper's Nest
The Viper's Nest is the seventh book. Peter Lerangis wrote it, and it came out in 2010.
The morning after the fire, Dan and Amy realize Irina's last words were a song. This leads them to Pretoria, South Africa. They sneak into a Tomas family hideout. The Holts chase them. They think the clue is diamond, and so do the Kabras. As Dan and Amy leave South Africa, the Kabras capture them. They escape in Grace's old plane, The Flying Lemur. They have a vial of green liquid. During a fight, the vial breaks. The green liquid, a Kabra poison, spills on Dan's arm. To save Dan, they fly to Grace Cahill's home in Madagascar. They find out the clue is aloe. They also learn their parents were Madrigals. This is a group Amy and Dan have learned to fear. This means they are Madrigals too.
Book 8: The Emperor's Code
The Emperor's Code is the eighth book. Gordon Korman wrote it, and it was published in 2010.
Amy and Dan go to China to find the next clue. They argue and split up. But they meet again at Mount Everest. They find a Janus vial left by George Mallory, a British climber. They fight Eisenhower Holt and Ian Kabra over a partial serum. Ian falls. Amy uses the serum to save him. Dan thinks they lost the clue. But Amy shows him a poem on silk fabric they found in Beijing. She tells him the next clue is raw silkworm secretion. They realize a formula on the silk means four partial serums make one master serum. Dan shows Amy a locket he found at a Shaolin temple. It has the name of pirate Anne Bonnie. They decide their next stop is the Caribbean.
Book 9: Storm Warning
Storm Warning is the ninth book. Linda Sue Park wrote it, and it came out in 2010.
Amy and Dan continue their hunt in the Bahamas and Jamaica. They don't trust Nellie after learning she works for William McIntyre. First, they go to Oceanus, an amusement park in the Bahamas. Dan enjoys the rides. Amy tells Dan about a pirate tour. It takes tourists to islands famous pirates visited. Amy and Dan agree to go, with Nellie. At a cove, the first mate gives Amy and Dan a paper with a message. They decode it: "EAST END OF ISLAND. CAVE."
Meanwhile, Natalie Kabra has nightmares about her mother, Isabel, trying to hurt Dan and Amy. The Cahills find a Tomas bear claw in the cave. But Amy gets hurt when the tide comes in. The group decides to go to Jamaica. At the Montego Bay airport, they find a hotel. They follow a lead to Spanish Town. They meet a historian, Lester, and his grandma, Miss Alice. They learn Nellie's family has ties to the Cahills. They go to the Port Royal excavation site with Lester. They find a box Grace donated that fits their collected objects. They can't open the box. Isabel's thugs chase them. Lester, who has the box, leads them into quicksand. He gets stuck and drowns.
After this, the siblings quit the hunt. Instead of taking them to the airport, Nellie stops at Moore town. She gives the box to a mysterious "Man In Black." He has been following Dan and Amy. He gives the siblings one hour to open the box. They figure out a strip they found is an unfolded Möbius strip. Amy puts the strip into the box, and it opens. It holds a poem by Madeleine Cahill and the clue: mace. The mystery man is Fiske Cahill, Amy and Dan's great-uncle and Grace's younger brother. He reveals the Madrigal branch. This is a secret part of the Cahill family. He makes Amy, Dan, and Nellie active Madrigals. Nellie is the first non-blood Madrigal. After reading the poem, Dan thinks their next stop is England.
Book 10: Into The Gauntlet
Into The Gauntlet is the tenth book. Margaret Peterson Haddix wrote it, and it was published in 2010.
All the Cahills go to the Globe Theater in London. They fight over a note. Amy and Dan get most of it. Other teams get little or nothing. All the teams dig up a grave. This leads them to the Cahill island, home of the founder, Gideon Cahill. They go through a challenge with questions for each family branch. Isabel Kabra captures them. She threatens their loved ones if they don't reveal their clues. She gets them to tell their clues and makes the serum. But Amy smashes the serum over Isabel's head, knocking her out. The last clue is the serum formula. Dan memorizes it, but no one wants it anymore. Amy and Dan bring the Cahills back together. Everyone will now have different lives. They go back to their normal lives, each getting two million dollars.

- Cahills vs Vespers also had two card packs. These packs had the same 16 game cards. They unlocked online "extreme" missions.
- In the third series, Unstoppable, each book has six game cards. These cards unlock an extra game in their online missions.
- In the fourth series, Doublecross, each book has six virtual cards.
The cards are a key part of the series. Players on the website need the cards to collect all the clues. In later series, they need the cards to unlock missions. The cards in the first series often had puzzles and riddles.
More cards have been released over time, and some are only virtual. Scholastic also made a game called Doublecross. In this game, players use their physical cards to battle opponents.
How the Series Started
An editorial team at Scholastic came up with the idea for an interactive series with online games. They asked Rick Riordan to write the first book. Riordan agreed because he liked the idea. As a middle school teacher, he enjoyed making history fun for young readers. The project was kept secret for about two years.
Movie Plans
Steven Spielberg bought the movie rights to the series in 2008. Spielberg and Scholastic Media president Deborah Forte were set to produce the series. Brett Ratner was interested in directing the first movie. Screenwriter Jeff Nathanson was hired in 2008. In 2012, Shawn Levy, who directed the Night at the Museum movies, got the rights to direct. Universal took over the movie rights in 2013.
A movie, The 39 Clues: The Movie, was planned for 2014. However, it seems the project was stopped. The latest information is from 2013, and production has not started.
