What Happens in Storm Warning?

A New Mystery Unfolds

As Amy and Dan Cahill leave China, they get a surprising call. The Holts, another family in the clue hunt, seem to know where they are going next! Amy and Dan quickly suspect Nellie Gomez, their trusted helper, might have told them.

On their plane ride, Amy and Dan try to get answers from Nellie. They find out that it wasn't their Aunt Beatrice who hired Nellie. Instead, it was Grace, their grandmother! Nellie also admits she works for someone named Mr. McIntyre. But she doesn't say who her real boss is. This makes Amy and Dan very suspicious of Nellie. They try to keep their distance from her.

Trouble in the Caribbean

The adventure continues in the Caribbean. Amy and Dan witness a sad event: a non-Cahill person named Lester dies because of the clue hunt. This makes Amy and Dan very upset and shocked. They decide they need to confront their Aunt Beatrice about what's happening.

But before they can, Nellie takes them! She brings them to Moore Town to meet a mysterious person known as The Man In Black. Amy and Dan are then forced to solve a tricky puzzle box. They had found this box in the museum where Lester used to work.

Solving the Puzzle Box

The puzzle box has special slots. These slots fit different items that represent the main Cahill family branches.

  • A jade piece with a dragon for the Lucians.
  • A bear claw found in a cave for the Tomas.
  • A wolf tooth from Isabel Kabra's bracelet for the Ekaterina.
  • A snake-shaped nose ring that Nellie wears for the Janus.

After solving this puzzle box, which belonged to a famous pirate named Anne Bonny, they find a new clue. This clue is the spice called Mace. They also learn they need to travel to England next.

Meeting The Man In Black

Amy and Dan finally learn the true identity of The Man In Black. He is Fiske Cahill, their grandmother Grace's brother! Fiske had run away when he was a kid. This is why Amy and Dan had never heard of him before.

Fiske shares an important secret about the Cahill family's history. He tells them the story of Madeleine Cahill. Madeleine was the founder of the Madrigals, a secret group.

The Madrigals' Secret Mission

Fiske explains that Gideon Cahill, the family's ancestor, found a cure for a terrible sickness. But this cure, a special serum, changed people's DNA. It gave them amazing abilities. Gideon gave a part of this serum to each of his four children.

Soon after, Gideon died in a fire. His children blamed each other and split up. They started their own family branches:

  • Luke started the Lucians.
  • Katherine started the Ekaterina.
  • Thomas started the Tomas.
  • Jane started the Janus.

But there was a secret! Gideon's wife, Olivia, was pregnant when he died. She had Madeleine Cahill. Olivia taught Madeleine that family was the most important thing. So, the Madrigals' main goal is to reunite the scattered Cahill family members.

Fiske also reveals that the Lucians had falsely accused Arthur and Hope Cahill of a crime in South Africa. He explains that Grace hired Nellie to spy for him. This was so the Madrigals would know about Amy and Dan. They wanted to offer Amy and Dan a special Madrigal status.

Before they leave, Fiske tells Amy and Dan everything. For the first time ever, someone not born into the Cahill family bloodline becomes an active Madrigal: Nellie Gomez! Amy and Dan also became members earlier, as revealed in book 7, The Viper's Nest.

Amy and Dan are then given seven more Madrigal clues: Pepper, Copper, Vinegar, Rosemary, and Lily. With these new clues, they head to England to continue their search for the next big clue.
