The Adventure Begins in Egypt
Amy and Dan Cahill head to Cairo, Egypt. Their trusted helper, Nellie Gomez, is with them. They are searching for a clue hidden by Katherine Cahill. She was a founder of the Ekaterina branch of their family.
As they arrive, a rival, Irina Spasky, follows them. Amy and Dan manage to escape into a store. Inside, they see a statue of an Egyptian goddess called the Sakhet. A man named Theo Cotter tells them the statue is a fake. Feeling disappointed, they go back to Nellie.
Traps and New Friends
The group goes to the Hotel Excelsior. There, they find a secret hideout of the Ekaterina family. They discover three Sakhet statues. The hotel owner, Bae Oh, traps them inside. He is also the leader of the Ekats. Bae Oh explains the history of the Sakhets to them.
Amy and Dan manage to escape the trap. One of their grandmother Grace's friends, Hilary Vale, finds them. She takes them to her house. Hilary gives them a letter and a small Sakhet. These were sent by Grace. They also learn that Theo is Hilary's grandson.
A Chase Across the Nile
Amy and Dan travel to Queen Nefertari's tomb in Luxor. But Irina traps them there again. She picks up Grace's guidebook during the escape.
After escaping Irina, they are trapped by another rival, Jonah Wizard. He leaves them on a deserted island in the Nile River. Jonah then leaves for Paris. A crocodile chases Amy and Dan across the island. Luckily, a local fisherman saves them.
They soon realize that Hilary and Theo tricked them. They wanted the Sakhet that Grace left for Amy and Dan. The siblings use the Sakhet to trick Irina. She now thinks she needs to go to Rabat, Morocco. Amy and Dan then head to Aswan. They plan to visit the island of Philae to find the next clue.
The Final Clue in Cairo
Amy and Dan try to find clues under the Nile River with Alistair. But they are not successful. They find something that leads them back to Cairo.
Once in Cairo, they visit a store Grace once visited. The store owner, Sami, gives them a Senet board. This is an ancient Egyptian game. They open the puzzle inside the board. Their next clue is "myrrh." Myrrh is a special type of tree resin.
The story ends with the Ekaterina hideout being destroyed. Amy and Dan find a mysterious cloth. It has many letter Ms in a pattern. This suggests it might be connected to the Madrigals, another secret group.
