The Veteran's Monument in Covington, Kentucky honors soldiers from both sides of the American Civil War. It is also known as the War Between the States Veteran's Memorial. This special monument is located in Linden Grove Cemetery. It is one of only two memorials in Kentucky that remember both Union and Confederate soldiers. The American Legion officially opened the monument on May 30, 1933. This date was Memorial Day that year.

What Makes This Monument Special?
This monument is unique in several ways. It was built as a platform, allowing people to stand on top for presentations. This was likely for Memorial Day events. It is the only Civil War monument in Kentucky designed as a platform. It is also the only monument in the state that uses the phrase "War Between the States".
Monument Design and Materials
The monument is about five feet tall. It is twenty-one feet long and nine feet wide. It is made from strong concrete and limestone. The center of the monument is hollow. This space was made for speakers during events.
Details of the Structure
At each corner of the monument, there are columns. These columns are part of the main structure. They also have concrete tops. On the north side, there is a stone plaque. This plaque has an important message carved into it. Steps on the south side let people climb onto the top of the monument. On the east side, you can see a brass seal. This seal shows the symbol of the American Legion. It reminds everyone who helped build this important memorial.
Cannons at the Monument
There are cannons placed on the east and west sides of the monument. These cannons are not from the 1860s. They were added later to complete the memorial.
National Recognition
On July 17, 1997, the Veteran's Monument received a special honor. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical sites in the United States. It was one of sixty-two Civil War monuments in Kentucky to be listed that day. These monuments were recognized as part of the Civil War Monuments of Kentucky group. The monument is very close to the GAR Monument in Covington. That monument was also added to the National Register at the same time. However, the GAR Monument was built four years earlier.
