The Veterans Cottages Historic District is a special place in King, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. It is a group of historic homes. These homes were built for people who served in the military. They were also for their families.
A Home for Veterans
The idea for these cottages came from a group called the Grand Army of the Republic. This group was made up of soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. They wanted to create a place where war veterans and their wives could live together. This was a new idea at the time. Most places only offered housing for veterans alone.
These homes became part of what is now known as the Wisconsin Veterans Home. It was a way to support those who served our country. In 1929, the state of Wisconsin took over the site. It has continued to provide housing for veterans ever since.
Protecting History
The Veterans Cottages Historic District is very important. It shows how people cared for veterans long ago. Because of its history, the district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This is a list of places in the United States that are important for their history or architecture. Being on this list helps protect the district. It was also added to the State Register of Historic Places in 1989.
Two other important buildings are also in the district. These are the Commandant's Residence Home and the Veterans Home Chapel. They are part of the rich history of caring for veterans in Wisconsin.
