Veterans Memorial Park is a special place in Boise, Idaho. It's a large park, about 38 acres, located right next to the beautiful Boise River. This park is a great spot for families to have picnics and kids to play. It also has important memorials that honor brave soldiers and veterans.

Even though the park is looked after by the Boise Parks and Recreation Department, it's actually an Idaho state park. This means it's a park for everyone in Idaho to enjoy.

Park History and Purpose

Veterans Memorial Park was built on a very historic site. Before it became a park, the land was home to something called the Idaho Soldiers Home. This facility was a place where soldiers who had served their country could live.

The Idaho Soldiers Home

The Idaho Soldiers Home, sometimes called the Old Soldier's Home, first opened its doors in 1895. It provided a safe and supportive place for veterans. The home helped many soldiers for over 70 years. It finally closed down in 1966.

Becoming a State Park

After the Idaho Soldiers Home closed, the land was transformed. In 1976, Veterans Memorial State Park officially opened to the public. It was created to continue honoring veterans and to provide a peaceful green space for everyone. The park serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers.
