The Vice President of Azerbaijan is a very important job in the country, second only to the President. The person holding this role helps the President and can even take over if the President cannot do their job.
The first and current Vice President is First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva. The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, created this position in 2017 and chose his wife for the role. If President Aliyev were to step down, Mehriban Aliyeva would become the President of Azerbaijan. Some people have said that creating this position helped keep the family's power strong in Azerbaijan.

How the Position Was Created
The job of Vice President was created through a change to Azerbaijan's laws. People voted on this change in a special election called a referendum on September 26, 2016. This change gave the President the power to choose or remove the First Vice President and other vice presidents.
What the Vice President Does
The Vice President has several important duties. They are ready to step in and lead the country if the President cannot.
Taking Over as President
If the President resigns or becomes unable to do their job, the Vice President becomes the acting President. Before this position was created, the Prime Minister would take on these duties. Now, the Vice President is first in line, and the Prime Minister is second.
If the President leaves office early, a new presidential election must happen within 60 days. Until a new President is elected, the First Vice President acts as the President. If the First Vice President also cannot do the job, another Vice President would take over.
Signing Agreements
The Vice President can also sign important agreements with other countries. This happens when the President gives them permission to do so. These agreements can be between governments or between different countries.
Who Can Be Vice President?
To become the Vice President, a person must meet certain requirements. They need to be a citizen of Azerbaijan and have the right to vote. They also must have a university degree and not have any duties to other countries.
On February 21, 2017, President Ilham Aliyev appointed his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, as the First Vice President. As mentioned, if President Aliyev were to step down, she would become President.
Special Protection (Immunity)
The Vice President of Azerbaijan has special protection called "personal immunity" while they are in office. This means they generally cannot be arrested, searched, or personally examined. However, there are exceptions, such as if they are caught doing something wrong right at that moment.
Only the President of Azerbaijan can end the Vice President's immunity. This usually happens after the Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan makes a request.
