The Vice President of Azerbaijan is a very important job in the country, second only to the President. This position was created in 2016. The first and current Vice President is Mehriban Aliyeva. She was appointed to this role on February 21, 2017.

What is the Vice President?
The Vice President helps the President of Azerbaijan. This role is like a backup leader. If the President cannot do their job, the Vice President steps in. Before this position existed, the Prime Minister would take over. Now, the Vice President is first in line.
How the Position Was Created
The job of Vice President was created through a change to Azerbaijan's constitution. People voted on this change in a special election called a referendum on September 26, 2016. This change gave the President the power to choose and remove the First Vice President and other vice presidents.
Who Can Be Vice President?
To become Vice President, a person must be a citizen of Azerbaijan. They need to have the right to vote. They also must have a university degree. Finally, they cannot have duties to any other country.
The Current Vice President
The current President, Ilham Aliyev, appointed his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, as the First Vice President. This happened on February 21, 2017. If President Aliyev were to leave his position, Mehriban Aliyeva would become the President of Azerbaijan. Some people have said that creating this position helps keep power within the President's family.
Powers of the Vice President
The Vice President has several important duties.
Taking Over for the President
If the President resigns or becomes unable to serve, the Vice President becomes the acting President. This means they do the President's job until a new President is elected. A special election for a new President must happen within 60 days. If the First Vice President also cannot serve, another Vice President would take over.
International Agreements
The Vice President can sign agreements with other countries. This happens when the President gives them permission to do so. These agreements can be between governments or between states.
Protection for the Vice President
The Vice President has special protection called personal immunity. This means they cannot be arrested or searched during their time in office. This rule applies unless they are caught doing something wrong right at that moment. Only the President can remove this special protection. This happens if the Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan asks the President to do so.
