Mehriban Arif gizi Aliyeva (born 26 August 1964) is an important politician and doctor from Azerbaijan. She holds two major roles in her country. She is the Vice President and also the First Lady.
She is married to Ilham Aliyev, who is the president of Azerbaijan. In 2017, President Aliyev created the position of Vice President. He then chose his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, to fill this new role.

Early Life and Family
Mehriban Aliyeva was born in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. She comes from a well-known and influential family. Her grandfather was a famous writer named Mir Jalal Pashayev. Her uncle, Hafiz Pashayev, was the first Ambassador from Azerbaijan to the United States.
Her father, Arif Pashayev, is the head of the National Aviation Academy in Baku. Her mother, Aida Imanguliyeva, was a scholar who studied languages and cultures.
Mehriban Aliyeva married Ilham Aliyev on 22 December 1983. Ilham is the son of Heydar Aliyev, a former leader of Azerbaijan. Mehriban and Ilham have two daughters, Leyla (born in 1984) and Arzu (born in 1989). They also have a son named Heydar (born in 1997).
Education and Medical Career
Mehriban Aliyeva finished secondary school in 1982. She then went to the Azerbaijan Medical University. She did very well in her studies there. Later, she continued her medical training at the Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy. She graduated from this academy in 1988.
From 1988 to 1992, Mehriban Aliyeva worked at a research institute for eye diseases in Moscow. This institute was part of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. She is known as a qualified physician and a former eye doctor.
Public Career
In 1995, Mehriban Aliyeva started the Azerbaijani Culture Friends Foundation. This organization helps to promote and protect Azerbaijani culture. The next year, in 1996, she launched a magazine called "Azerbaijan - Heritage." This magazine is published in three languages: Azerbaijani, English, and Russian. Its goal is to share Azerbaijani culture with more people.
In 2004, Aliyeva created the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. This foundation is named after her father-in-law, Heydar Aliyev. It works to promote his ideas and support various projects. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation builds schools and hospitals in Azerbaijan. It also organizes many cultural events.
The foundation supports projects outside Azerbaijan too. For example, it has helped with renovations at famous places like the Louvre Museum and the Palace of Versailles in France. It also supported work at Strasbourg Cathedral.
Mehriban Aliyeva is also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. This means she helps promote UNESCO's goals, like education and culture, around the world. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador for ISESCO, an organization focused on education, science, and culture in the Islamic world.
Since 2004, she has been a member of the Political Board of the New Azerbaijan Party. Her husband, Ilham Aliyev, is the leader of this party. In 2013, she became the deputy chairperson of the party. She was also chosen to lead the organizing committee for the first European Games held in Baku in 2015.
Member of Parliament
In 2005, Mehriban Aliyeva was elected to the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, which is the country's parliament. She ran as a candidate for the New Azerbaijan Party. She won her election with a large number of votes.
During her time as a Member of Parliament, Mehriban Aliyeva often asked the parliament to pass amnesty acts. These acts allow prisoners to be released from jail early. As a result of her efforts, over 30,000 prisoners were released in 2007, 2009, 2013, and 2016.
Vice President of Azerbaijan

On 21 February 2017, Mehriban Aliyeva was appointed as the First Vice President of Azerbaijan. This appointment was made by her husband, President Ilham Aliyev. If the president were to step down, the Vice President would become the President of Azerbaijan.
The position of Vice President was created through a constitutional referendum in 2016. This referendum also changed the age requirement for the president.
Personal Life

Mehriban Aliyeva married Ilham Aliyev in Baku on 22 December 1983. They have two daughters, Leyla and Arzu, and a son, Heydar. Their daughter Leyla is an editor for Baku magazine.
