Mehriban Aliyeva (born 26 August 1964) is an important politician and doctor from Azerbaijan. She holds the roles of Vice President and First Lady of the country.
She is married to Ilham Aliyev, who is the president of Azerbaijan. In 2017, her husband created the position of Vice President and appointed her to this role.

Early Life and Family
Mehriban Pashayeva was born in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. She comes from a well-known family. Her grandfather, Mir Jalal Pashayev, was a famous writer. Her uncle, Hafiz Pashayev, was Azerbaijan's first Ambassador to the United States.
Her father, Arif Pashayev, is the head of the National Aviation Academy in Baku. Her mother, Aida Imanguliyeva, was a scholar who studied languages and cultures.
Education and Medical Career
Mehriban Aliyeva finished high school in 1982. She then studied at the Azerbaijan Medical University. She was a very good student there. Later, she continued her medical studies at the Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy, graduating in 1988.
From 1988 to 1992, she worked at a research institute in Moscow that focused on eye diseases. In 2005, she earned her PhD. She is known as a qualified doctor and former eye specialist.
Public Service and Foundations
In 1995, Mehriban Aliyeva started the Azerbaijani Culture Friends Foundation. This foundation helps to promote and preserve Azerbaijani culture. The next year, in 1996, she launched a magazine called "Azerbaijan - Heritage." This magazine is published in three languages: Azerbaijani, English, and Russian. Its goal is to share Azerbaijani culture with more people.
In 2004, Aliyeva created the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. This foundation is named after her father-in-law, Heydar Aliyev, who was a former president. The foundation works on many projects in Azerbaijan. It helps build schools and hospitals. It also organizes many cultural events. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation supports projects outside Azerbaijan too. For example, it has helped with renovations at famous places like the Louvre Museum and the Palace of Versailles.
Mehriban Aliyeva is also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. This means she helps promote UNESCO's goals, like education and culture, around the world. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador for ISESCO, another international organization. In 2004, she became a member of the Executive Committee for the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan.
Since 2004, she has been a member of the Political Board of the New Azerbaijan Party. Her husband is the leader of this party. In 2013, she became the deputy chairperson of the party. She was also chosen to lead the organizing committee for the 1st European Games held in Baku.
Member of Parliament
In 2005, Mehriban Aliyeva was elected to the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, which is the country's parliament. She ran as a candidate for the New Azerbaijan Party. She won her election with a large number of votes. She was re-elected to parliament in 2010 and 2015, also with strong support.
During her time as a Member of Parliament, Mehriban Aliyeva asked the parliament to pass laws that would release prisoners. As a result, in 2007, 2009, 2013, and 2016, more than 30,000 prisoners were released from different sentences.
Vice President of Azerbaijan

On 21 February 2017, her husband, President Ilham Aliyev, appointed her as the First Vice President of Azerbaijan. This position was created through a special vote in 2016. If the president were to step down, the First Vice President would become president.
Personal Life

Mehriban Aliyeva married Ilham Aliyev in Baku on 22 December 1983. They have two daughters, Leyla (born in 1984) and Arzu (born in 1989). They also have a son, Heydar (born in 1997). Their daughter Leyla is the editor of Baku magazine.
