The Heydar Aliyev Foundation (which is called Heydər Əliyev Fondu in Azerbaijani) is a private organization. It is led by Mehriban Aliyeva, who is the First Lady of Azerbaijan. The foundation is named after Heydar Aliyev, who used to be the president of Azerbaijan. He was the father of the current president, Ilham Aliyev. Some people have raised questions about how the foundation handles its money.
History of the Foundation
Heydar Aliyev passed away in 2003. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation was then created in 2004 by Ilham Aliyev.
How the Foundation Works
The Heydar Aliyev Foundation is a special kind of organization. It is a non-governmental and non-commercial group. This means it is not run by the government and does not aim to make a profit.
The foundation works with many different countries around the world. It has offices in other places, like the United States, Russia, Romania, and Turkey.
What the Foundation Does
The Heydar Aliyev Foundation helps with many projects. It builds more schools and hospitals than some government ministries in Azerbaijan. It also organizes many cultural events.
The foundation helped create the Baku Museum of Modern Art. This museum is part of a plan to build an "eco-cultural zone" in Baku. This area will also have a white-sand beach and a special walkway over the Caspian Sea.
The foundation has also supported projects in France. It helped pay for repairs at the famous Louvre Museum and the Palace of Versailles. It also gave money to fix stained-glass windows in France's Strasbourg Cathedral. In 2011, the foundation donated money to help rebuild the Berlin City Palace in Germany.
Other international projects include rebuilding a school in Pakistan. This school had been destroyed by an earthquake. The foundation also organized events in Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2011. These events showed off Azerbaijani art and music.
The foundation helps organize many music festivals. These include the "Gabala International Music Festival" and the "World of Mugham Festival". Other festivals are the "Uzeyir Hajibeyov International Music Festival" and the "Mstislav Rostropovich Baku International Festival". In May 2021, the foundation brought back the "Kharibulbul International Folklore Festival" in Shusha. This festival had not happened for 30 years. It continued to be celebrated in 2022.
The foundation also paid for the restoration of old underground tombs in the Vatican. This project was agreed upon in 2012. The agreement was signed by Mehriban Aliyeva and Cardinal Gianfranco Ravazi.
Between 2004 and 2014, the foundation published many books and booklets. These publications shared information about Azerbaijan's history, culture, art, food, and nature.
