Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Vicente Cano (born January 1, 1927, in Argamasilla de Alba – died July 11, 1994, in Ciudad Real) was a Spanish poet. He wrote many poems about the countryside where he grew up, his family, and hope.

His Life Story

Vicente Cano was born in Argamasilla de Alba. His father, Vicente Cano García, was a tailor, and his mother was Rosa Cano Ramírez. His family had moved to Argamasilla de Alba from Moral de Calatrava. Vicente was one of eight children, with four brothers and four sisters.

He grew up during the Spanish Civil War, which was a tough time for his family. His father worked very long hours as a tailor, and his mother and sisters often helped him.

When Vicente was 25, he started writing poems for his girlfriend, Teresa. She later became his wife, and they had three children together. Vicente Cano passed away from cancer when he was 67 years old, leaving behind many beautiful poems.

His Poetry World

In 1964, Vicente Cano started attending literary meetings. He wrote poems about the beautiful landscapes of La Mancha, the region where he lived. His poems also often talked about his children, the sun, Christmas, and the important idea of hope. Hope, for him, was a light that could brighten the difficult parts of life.

He was part of a group called the "Literary Group Guadiana." He even became the leader of this group and its magazine, Manxa. This magazine shared poems from writers across Latin America. In 1973, Vicente moved to Ciudad Real for a new job.

The first issue of Manxa magazine came out in 1975. Vicente was a key person in leading and creating for this magazine. Many poets from Spain and other countries recognized his hard work in the 50th issue of the magazine in 1990.

In 1986, a collection of poems called Antology of Group Guadiana was published. Vicente, as the director, included many of his own poems. These poems explored big ideas like life, poetry, truth, and his love for La Mancha.

He also took part in important events, like the "1st International Poetry Biennial" in Madrid in 1987. Two years later, he was invited to a big meeting of writers in Zafra.

Before publishing a new book in 1991, Vicente wrote tribute poems for other poets. He also regularly contributed poems to magazines and newspapers like Arquero and Lanza. Even though his work with the Literary Group Guadiana and Manxa magazine took him away from Argamasilla de Alba, his last book was published there.

Vicente Cano died on July 11, 1994. He left behind many published poems and five books that were ready to be printed.
