Vicente Casanova y Marzol (born April 16, 1854 – died October 23, 1930) was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church from Spain. He became a Cardinal, which is a very high rank, in 1925. Before that, he was the Archbishop of Granada from 1921 until he passed away.

Early Life and Education

Vicente Casanova y Marzol was born in a town called Borja, in Spain. He decided to study for the church from a young age. He attended special schools called seminaries in the cities of Zaragoza and Madrid. These schools train people to become priests.

In 1881, he was ordained as a priest. This meant he could perform religious duties. The next year, in 1882, he earned a special degree in theology from Valencia. This degree showed his deep knowledge of religious studies.

Becoming a Church Leader

After his studies, Vicente Casanova y Marzol worked as a pastor. A pastor is a priest who leads a local church community. He served in several towns, including Maluenda and Alfaro. For many years, he was a pastor at a church in Madrid. This church was called Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo.

In 1907, Pope Pius X chose him to become the Bishop of Almería. A bishop is a senior leader in the church. He oversees many churches in a specific area. On March 25, 1908, he had his episcopal consecration. This is a special ceremony where a new bishop is officially welcomed. Archbishop Antonio Vico led the ceremony.

Archbishop and Cardinal

Vicente Casanova y Marzol continued to rise in the church. On March 7, 1921, he was named the Archbishop of Granada. An archbishop leads a very large and important church area called an archdiocese.

His highest honor came on March 30, 1925. Pope Pius XI made him a Cardinal Priest. This happened during a special meeting called a consistory. Cardinals are the Pope's closest advisors. They also help choose the next Pope. His cardinal title was for the church of Ss. Vitale, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio in Rome.

Cardinal Casanova y Marzol was part of an important event in Spain. He was among the church leaders who blessed King Alfonso XIII. This was during a celebration of the King's twenty-fifth year on the throne.

Later Life and Legacy

Cardinal Casanova y Marzol passed away in Zaragoza on October 23, 1930. He was 76 years old. He died while attending a national meeting about religious education. He is buried in the main church of Granada, known as the metropolitan cathedral of Granada.
