Vicente Mejía Colindres (born April 6, 1878 – died August 24, 1966) was an important political leader in Honduras. He served as the President of Honduras two times. His first time was for a short period between September 16 and October 5, 1919. Later, he became president again from February 1, 1929, to November 16, 1932.

Becoming President

Vicente Mejía Colindres was chosen by the people in the 1928 elections. This was a special time in Honduran history. It was one of the few times that power was passed peacefully from one president to another, especially when the new president was from a different political party. This showed that democracy was growing stronger in Honduras.

Challenges During His Term

Even though his presidency started well, it faced a big challenge. The world was hit by a major economic problem called the Great Depression of 1929. This made it hard for many countries, including Honduras, to grow their economy and help their people. Despite these difficulties, President Mejía Colindres worked to lead the country through tough times.

Peaceful Handover of Power

Just like he came to power peacefully, Vicente Mejía Colindres also handed over power smoothly. In the 1932 elections, Tiburcio Carías Andino won. President Mejía Colindres stepped down, allowing the new president to take office without conflict. This peaceful transfer of power was a very important event for Honduras's democracy.

Later Life

After his time as president, Vicente Mejía Colindres continued to be a respected figure. He passed away on August 24, 1966, in Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. He is remembered for his role in promoting peaceful political changes in his country.
