Miguel Paz Barahona: A Honduran Leader
Miguel Paz Barahona was born on September 3, 1863. He passed away on November 11, 1937. Besides being a politician, he was also a physician, which means he was a doctor.
He belonged to the National Party of Honduras. This was one of the main political groups in the country.
Becoming President of Honduras
In 1924, the National Party of Honduras chose Miguel Paz Barahona as their candidate for president. The other main political group, the Liberal Party of Honduras (PLH), decided not to put forward their own candidate.
Because of this, Miguel Paz Barahona won the election with almost all the votes. He received 99 percent of the vote. This made him the 36th President of Honduras.
A Time of Peace and Stability
After his term ended in 1929, Vicente Mejía Colindres from the Liberal Party of Honduras became president. This change of power was very special. It was one of the first times in Honduras that power was passed peacefully from one political party to another.
Miguel Paz Barahona's presidency was important. It marked the start of a more stable period in Honduras. This time of peace lasted for about 30 years. It followed a period of many changes and problems in the early 1900s.

Besides being president, Miguel Paz Barahona also served as the President of the National Congress of Honduras. He held this position from 1933 to 1934. The National Congress is like the country's parliament or law-making body.
