The Vickery Building is a special old building in downtown Augusta, Maine. It was built a long time ago, in 1895. This building is important because it's one of the few buildings in the area made from strong granite. It was built for a famous person named Peleg O. Vickery. He was a publisher and also the mayor of Augusta three times! Because of its history and unique look, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
What the Building Looks Like
The Vickery Building stands on the east side of Water Street. This is in the middle of downtown Augusta. It is a four-story building made of stone. The front of the building is made of granite. It has three main sections. The style is called commercial Italianate.
On the first floor, there is an entrance in the middle. It has two columns next to it. There are large display windows on both sides of the entrance. These windows have wooden frames.
The second floor has windows with pairs of decorated columns between them. These windows have pointed tops, like small roofs.
The third floor windows are in square openings. They have curved designs above them. These designs sit on top of the columns from the second floor.
The fourth floor has simple windows. Each section has two windows. The very top of the building has a fancy ledge called a cornice. Above that is a decorative wall called a parapet.
