Victor "Vic" Coulsen was an American jazz trumpeter. His exact birth and death dates are not known. People often called him Vic Coulsen, Vic Coulson, or even Vic Couslen.

Vic Coulsen was a member of the house band at a famous club called Monroe's. He played there as early as 1940, under the direction of Al Tinney.

Who Was Vic Coulsen?

Vic Coulsen is remembered for having a big impact on a new style of jazz called bebop. Many famous jazz musicians, like Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker, were influenced by him.

How Did He Influence Bebop?

Charlie Parker, a legendary jazz musician, said that Coulsen played "things I'd never heard before." Parker heard Coulsen play at Monroe's club. This music was so inspiring that Parker decided to leave his band and move to New York City.

Because of these stories from other musicians, Vic Coulsen is seen as one of the early important figures in the history of bebop jazz. He helped shape the sound of this exciting new music style.

Did Vic Coulsen Record Music?

Sadly, Vic Coulsen did not record much of his own music. This means we don't have many recordings to hear his unique trumpet style. He did play in the trumpet section of an orchestra led by Coleman Hawkins in 1944. However, he did not play any solos on those recordings. These tracks were later released on a compilation album called Rainbow Mist in 1992.
