Victor Lacroix facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Victor Lacroix (died 1866) was a brave man from New Orleans who fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was known as a Creole of color, which meant he had a mixed heritage, often with French or Spanish and African roots. Victor was the son of François Lacroix, a successful businessman and tailor who also belonged to the Creole of color community. Victor Lacroix sadly passed away during the New Orleans massacre of 1866, an important event in the fight for civil rights.

After Victor's death, people remembered him and his dedication to equal rights. Poems were written to honor him and were published in the New Orleans Tribune, a newspaper that supported civil rights for African Americans. These tributes showed how much people respected his efforts to achieve fairness and equality for all.

Victor Lacroix's Family Life

Four years before he died, Victor Lacroix married Sarah Brown in a religious ceremony at St. Alphonse Church. At that time, laws in Louisiana made it difficult for people of different races to marry. These laws changed a few years later, in 1868.

After Victor's death, his father, François Lacroix, made sure that Sarah and her two young children were taken care of. This showed the strong family support within the Lacroix family.
