Victor Alexandre Puiseux (born April 16, 1820 – died September 9, 1883) was a French mathematician and astronomer. He was known for his important work in mathematics, which helped other famous mathematicians like Bernhard Riemann. Some mathematical ideas, like the Puiseux series, are named after him.

Besides his scientific work, Victor Puiseux was also a great amateur mountaineer. He climbed a peak in the French Alps in 1848, and that mountain is now named after him. Even a type of Israeli gecko, called Ptyodactylus puiseuxi, was named in his honor!

About Victor Puiseux

Victor Puiseux was born in 1820 in a town called Argenteuil, in France. He became a professor at the Sorbonne, a famous university. There, he taught about celestial mechanics, which is the study of how planets and other objects move in space.

His Work in Math and Science

Puiseux was very good at mathematical analysis. He created new ways to understand complex math problems, especially those involving algebraic functions. His work in celestial mechanics also helped people learn more about how the universe works.

In 1871, he was chosen to be a member of the French Academy, which is a very respected group of scientists and scholars. Everyone agreed he deserved to be part of it.

His Family

One of Victor Puiseux's sons, Pierre Henri Puiseux, also became a famous astronomer. It seems a love for the stars ran in the family!

Victor Puiseux passed away in 1883 in Frontenay, France.
