A Look Back: Victoria's History
Victoria started as a simple pioneer camp way back in the 1700s. Imagine people settling here long ago! In the 1950s, things changed a lot when coal mines started opening in Southern Indiana. Big parts of the forests were dug up to create "strip mines." These mines removed coal from close to the surface.
The coal mines were eventually closed in 1977. This happened because coal prices dropped, and most of the coal in the area had been used up. For a while, the land was just left alone. But then, the nearby town of Newburgh grew bigger and needed more places for people to live.
Soon, homes were built around the old strip mines, which had filled with water. These homes became even more valuable when the Victoria National Golf Club was built in 1996. This amazing golf course was designed by a famous golf course architect named Tom Fazio.
Victoria National Golf Club
The Victoria National Golf Club is a really special place. It's ranked as one of the top golf clubs in the entire United States, and it's the number one golf course in Indiana! What makes it unique is that 14 of its golf holes have water hazards. This is because the course was built on the land that used to be an open strip mine.
On July 1, 2012, Victoria became even more famous. It hosted the United Leasing Championship, a big golf tournament that's part of the PGA's Nationwide Tour. This event brought a lot of attention to this cool golf course in southwestern Indiana.
