The Victoria Cross Ranges are a group of mountains found in the Canadian Rockies, located northwest of Jasper. This special area is known for its beautiful peaks, and out of 19 mountains in the range, five are named after brave Canadians who received the Victoria Cross. The entire area of these ranges covers about 678 square kilometers.

What is the Victoria Cross?

The Victoria Cross is the highest award for bravery in the British and Commonwealth armed forces. It is given to soldiers, sailors, and air force members who show extreme courage, often in very dangerous situations. It's a very rare and important medal, showing incredible heroism.

Five of the mountains in the Victoria Cross Ranges are named after Canadians who earned this amazing award. These names help us remember their bravery and sacrifices.

  • Mount McKean (2,743 meters or 9,000 feet) is named after George Burdon McKean, a Victoria Cross recipient.
  • Mount Kinross (2,650 meters or 8,695 feet) honors Cecil John Kinross, another brave soldier who received the Victoria Cross.
  • Mount Zengel (2,630 meters or 8,629 feet) is named for Raphael Louis Zengel, a Victoria Cross recipient.
  • Mount Kerr (2,560 meters or 8,399 feet) remembers John Chipman Kerr, who also earned the Victoria Cross.
  • Mount Pattison (2,316 meters or 7,600 feet) is named after John George Pattison, a Victoria Cross recipient.
