What is a Drill Hall?

Building the Drill Hall
The Victoria Road drill hall was built in 1873. It was made to be the main base for a group called the 37th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers. These volunteers were local people who trained to help defend their country if needed.
The Hall's Military Role
Over time, the 37th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers changed. In 1908, they became part of a larger army group. This new group was the 4th Battalion of the King's Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster).
When World War I started in August 1914, soldiers from this battalion gathered at the drill hall. They got ready there before going to fight on the Western Front. The Western Front was a major battle area in France and Belgium.
From Military to Community
The battalion that used the drill hall was eventually closed down. This happened just before the Second World War began. After that, the drill hall was no longer needed for military training.
Instead, the building was given a new purpose. It became a place for fun and activities for the local community. Today, it is known as the Red Rose Social and Recreation Centre. It is a busy spot where people can meet and enjoy different events.
