Viladasens is a small village located in the Girona province in Catalonia, Spain. It is a quiet place with a rich history. As of 2018, about 204 people live there.

History of Viladasens

The first time Viladasens was mentioned in a document was in the year 1058. It was called "VILLAMAR DEASINIS" back then.

Ancient Settlements

People lived in Viladasens even during the Iberian period. This was a long time ago, before the Romans. We know this because of things found on a hillside and at a place called Cross Fellini. When a highway was being built, workers found six old huts. These huts were part of a small center where people made pottery around the 3rd century BC.

Roman Times

Later, during Roman times, a very important road called the Via Augusta passed right through the town. To the east of the town, experts found what might have been a Roman "mansion." This was like a large guesthouse for travelers. It was called Cinniana, and it gave its name to the nearby Cinyana river.

Medieval Period

By the 11th century, two important church areas, called parishes, were already set up in Viladasens and Fellini. Old church documents show that these churches had Romanesque features. This means they were built in a style common in Europe from the 6th to 10th centuries. Many old houses from this time, like "the Blackberry" and "can strip," show that farming grew a lot during the medieval period. These two parishes were also part of a "royal bailiwick domain." This means the king owned and controlled the land for many centuries.

Recent History

Viladasens has always been a farming community. In the 1700s, its population grew from about 250 people to 404. It stayed around that number until the middle of the 20th century. Then, big changes in farming caused many people to leave their farms. The population dropped by half, from 357 people in 1960 to 189 in 1981. However, in the last 20 years, the population has been stable. Some farms have adapted to modern times and continue to operate.

Even with all the changes, Viladasens still looks like a rural farming village today. But it also uses modern technology to make life better.

Places to See

Viladasens has several interesting old buildings, especially churches.

  • Viladesens
    Parish Church of St. Vincent
  • Parish Church of St. Vincent: This is a religious building and an important local landmark.
  • Church of St. Martin of Fellini: Another old church in the area.
  • Church of San Martin de la Mora: A third religious building with historical roots.
  • Balaguer Viladasens and Fellini: These are examples of old civil buildings, not churches.

Famous Visitors

A famous Spanish poet, Antonio Machado, spent his last night in Spain in Viladasens. This was from January 26 to 27, just before he crossed the border into France.

Economy

The main ways people make a living in Viladasens are through farming and raising animals. Most of the farming relies on rainfed agriculture, meaning crops get water only from rainfall.
