Viliami Fainga'a grew up in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Australia. He started playing rugby league when he was young. His first team was the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. Viliami went to St. Edmund's College, Canberra for school.

Viliami has three brothers who are also professional rugby players. His older brothers are Anthony Fainga'a and Saia Fainga'a, who are twins. His younger brother is Colby Fainga'a. The Fainga'a family has roots from Tonga, England, and Italy.

Playing Rugby League

After finishing school, Viliami played rugby league. He played for the Canberra Raiders' Jersey Flegg team in 2007. In 2008, he played for the Melbourne Storm under 20s team. He played 24 games and scored one try. Later, he moved to Queensland and played for the Ipswich Jets. This team is part of the Queensland Cup competition. Viliami played rugby league until 2011.

Playing Rugby Union

Viliami Fainga'a switched back to rugby union in 2011. He first played for the University of Queensland Rugby Club. In 2012, he joined his older brothers at GPS. He made his first international appearance for the Tonga national team in 2012. This game was against the Samoa national team.
