Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Church: A Historic Building

The Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Church is a very old and important building in Villafranca de la Sierra. It was built in the 1400s, which is the fifteenth century!

Church Design and Features

The church is made from large, cut stones. It has one main area, called a nave, and a bell tower. This church was actually built on top of an even older church from the Romanesque period.

The oldest part of the church is a special chapel shaped like a half-circle, possibly from the 1300s. The main altar inside the church was finished around 1690. The back part of the church, called the apse, is round and has two side entrances that were rebuilt in the 1600s.

The main area of the church has three round arches with fancy decorations. These arches used to support a different type of ceiling, but now they have plaster vaults. The main arch connecting the nave to the chapel was also rebuilt in the 1500s.
