What is the Vinča Script?
The Vinča script is a set of signs. People from the Vinča culture used them. This culture lived in parts of modern-day Serbia, Romania, and other Balkan countries. The symbols are often found on clay objects. These objects include pottery, small statues, and tablets.
Discovering the Symbols
Many Vinča symbols were first found in 1908. This happened during digs by Miloje Vasić. He was working in Vinča, a place near Belgrade, Serbia. Since then, over 150 Vinča sites have been found. Many more symbols have been uncovered.
The Tărtăria Tablets
In 1961, three special clay tablets were found. They were discovered in a village called Tărtăria in Romania. These are known as the Tărtăria tablets. They are very old, dating back to about 5300 BC. The tablets have symbols carved into them. These are the Vinča symbols.
Are They Ancient Writing?
Some experts believe these symbols are a very early form of writing. If this is true, they would be the oldest writing ever found. This would make them even older than ancient Egyptian or Mesopotamian writing. However, other experts think they might be just decorative marks. They could also be symbols used for religious rituals. The meaning of the Vinča script is still a puzzle. It has not been fully figured out yet.
