Virginia Grey (born March 22, 1917 – died July 31, 2004) was an American actress. She appeared in over 100 movies. She also acted in many radio and television shows. Her career lasted from the 1930s to the early 1980s.

Virginia Grey's Life and Career

Early Life and First Roles

Virginia Grey was born on March 22, 1917, in Edendale, California. She was the youngest of three daughters. Her father, Ray Grey, was a film director. A famous film star, Gloria Swanson, was one of her early babysitters.

Virginia started acting when she was just 10 years old. Her first movie was the silent film Uncle Tom's Cabin (1927). In this movie, she played the character of Little Eva. After acting for a few years, she took a break. She left acting for three years to finish her education.

Becoming a Star

In the 1930s, Virginia Grey returned to movies. She started with small roles and worked as an extra. Soon, she signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). This was a very big film studio.

She appeared in several popular films for MGM:

Virginia left MGM in 1942. She continued to work steadily for many different film studios. In the 1950s and 1960s, producer Ross Hunter often cast her. She appeared in his popular movies like All That Heaven Allows, Back Street, and Madame X.

Television Work

Virginia Grey also had a busy career in television. In 1951, she played Blanche Bickerson in the TV comedy series The Bickersons. She was a regular on television throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

She appeared on many well-known TV shows, including:

  • Wagon Train
  • Bonanza
  • Peter Gunn
  • Ironside

Later Life and Legacy

Virginia Grey was a close friend of actor Clark Gable in the 1940s. They were often seen together at restaurants. Virginia Grey never married.

She passed away on July 31, 2004, at the age of 87. She was living at the Motion Picture Home in Woodland Hills, California. Her ashes were scattered at sea off the coast of Los Angeles.

Later, actress Anna Torv played Virginia Grey. This was in the HBO miniseries The Pacific.
