A Palace for a Viceroy
This amazing palace was built between 1772 and 1778. It was made for a very important person named Manuel d'Amat i de Junyent. He was the Viceroy of Peru from 1761 to 1776. A viceroy was like a governor who ruled a large area for the king.
How the Palace Got Its Name
The palace is named after Manuel d'Amat's wife. In Catalan, the word virreina means vicereine. This is the female version of a viceroy. So, the palace is known as the "Viceroy's Wife's Palace."
Who Designed the Palace?
The architect who designed this grand building was Carles Grau. He built the palace in a style that mixed two famous art styles: baroque and rococo. These styles are known for being very fancy and detailed. Carles Grau was also a sculptor. He created the beautiful decorations above the windows and the vases on the roof.
Art and Statues
On the outside of the palace, you can see a statue of Our Lady of the Rosary. This statue was made by an artist named Luisa Granero in 1967. It adds to the palace's artistic and historical feel.
