The Viscount of Irvine was a special noble title in Scotland. It was created on May 23, 1661, for a man named Henry Ingram. He lived in places like Temple Newsam in Yorkshire. At the same time, he was also given the title of Lord Ingram. These titles were part of the Scottish nobility.

Henry Ingram was the grandson of Sir Arthur Ingram. Sir Arthur was a well-known person who lived from about 1565 to 1642. On June 7, 1661, Henry married Essex Montagu. She was the daughter of Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Manchester.

The Ingram Family and the Title

Henry and Essex had two sons. Both of their sons became Viscounts of Irvine. Their older son, Edward, became the 2nd Viscount but sadly passed away when he was very young.

Henry's second son, Arthur, became the 3rd Viscount. He was an important person in politics. He served as a Member of Parliament for Scarborough and Yorkshire. He also held a special role as Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire. This role meant he was the King's representative in that area. Arthur married Isabella Machell.

Five of Arthur and Isabella's sons later became Viscounts. These were the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Viscounts. The 5th Viscount also served as Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Both the 6th and 7th Viscounts were Members of Parliament for Horsham. They also served as Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire. Isabella Ingram, their mother, lived a very long life. She passed away in 1764 when she was 94 years old. She outlived all her sons who held the title.

The Last Viscount

The 8th Viscount was succeeded by his nephew, Charles. Charles became the 9th Viscount. He was the only son of Colonel the Honourable Charles Ingram, who was the seventh son of the 3rd Viscount. The 9th Viscount also represented Horsham in Parliament, just like his father had. The title of Viscount of Irvine ended when Charles, the 9th Viscount, passed away in 1778.

The Honourable Isabella Ingram was the eldest daughter of the 9th Viscount.
