Rich Ingram, 5th Viscount of Irvine (born January 6, 1688 – died April 10, 1721) was an important English nobleman and politician. He held the title of Viscount of Irvine, which was a Scottish noble title. He was also a Colonel in the British Army.

Early Life and Family

Rich Ingram was born on January 6, 1688. He was the second of nine sons born to Isabella Machell and Arthur Ingram, 3rd Viscount of Irvine. His father was a Member of Parliament for Yorkshire and Scarborough. He was also the Vice-Admiral of Yorkshire, which meant he was in charge of naval matters in that area.

Rich had many brothers. His elder brother, Edward, also held the title of Viscount of Irvine before him. Sadly, Edward died from smallpox after traveling around Europe. Out of all his brothers, only one, Charles, had children.

Rich Ingram went to Eton College, a famous school. At 14, in 1703, he started studying at Christ's College, Cambridge, a well-known university. He also studied at the University of Leyden in September 1704.

His Career and Roles

When Rich Ingram turned 21, he inherited some land and properties from his grandfather, John Machell. This included land in Horsham and properties in London.

In 1714, his older brother Edward passed away from smallpox. Rich then became the 5th Viscount of Irvine. Because this was a Scottish noble title, it did not give him a seat in the English House of Lords.

However, Rich Ingram held several important positions. In 1714, he was made Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire. This role meant he was the King's representative in that part of England. He kept this job until 1721.

From 1715 to 1721, he was also the Governor of Kingston-upon-Hull. This made him responsible for the city of Kingston-upon-Hull. He was also a colonel in different army regiments. From 1715 to 1717, he led the 16th Regiment of Foot. Then, from 1717 to 1721, he led the 1st King's Dragoon Guards.

In 1720, he was chosen to be the Governor of Barbados, an island in the Caribbean. However, he died from smallpox before he could take up this new role.

Personal Life

In 1717, Lord Irvine married Lady Anne Howard. She was the daughter of Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle. A famous artist named Jonathan Richardson painted a portrait of them. Rich and Anne did not have any children.

Rich Ingram died in April 1721, when he was only 33 years old. He also died from smallpox, just like his older brother. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, a very famous church in London where many important people are laid to rest.

After Rich's death, his younger brother, Arthur, became the 6th Viscount of Irvine. Lady Anne Howard, Rich's wife, later married another man named William Douglas in 1737. She passed away in December 1764.
