Vita Student Sheffield is a tall building in Sheffield city centre. It is located on Wellington Street. Before 2014, it was known as Telephone House.
The building is 56 metres (about 184 feet) tall. It has sixteen floors. When it was finished in 1972, it was the third-tallest building in Sheffield. By May 2020, it had become the ninth-tallest. Today, it provides homes for students.
Building History
The building was finished in 1972. For many years, until 2012, it was used by a company called BT. They used it to manage phone networks in Sheffield.
Telephone House was built where old council homes used to be. This happened during a time when Sheffield was being rebuilt in the late 1960s and 1970s. Part of the lower floors of the building now has a large car park.
In January 2012, some companies bought the building. BT moved out completely in October of that year.
New Life as Student Homes
In March 2014, a company called Vita Student bought the empty Telephone House. They planned to turn the building into homes for students. These homes would be for students going to Sheffield's two universities: Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield.
When Vita Student bought the building, they changed its name to Vita Student Sheffield. The project to change the building cost about £35 million. The inside of the building was completely redone. The outside also got a new look, with all the windows being replaced. However, they kept the building's original style.
A sixteenth floor was added to the building. This new floor has fancy apartments and suites. The ground and basement floors used to be a car park. Now, these areas have shared facilities for students. These include a gym, a cinema, a games room, a laundry room, and a reception area.
Work to change the building started in July 2014. It was finished in August 2015. This was just in time for students to move in for the 2015–2016 school year.
