Vitali Georgievich Gubarev (Russian: Виталий Георгиевич Губарев, August 30, 1912 — 1981) was a famous Russian writer. He wrote many popular books for children. His stories often included fantasy and adventure.

About Vitali Gubarev

Vitali Gubarev was born in Rostov-on-Don, a city in Russia. His father, Georgy Gubarev, was a historian. He wrote books about the history of the Cossacks. Vitali's father later moved to the United States.

His mother, Antonina Gubareva, raised Vitali and his brother. Vitali spent his childhood in a village called Kushchyovskaya. There, he finished secondary school. He even studied with his future wife, Yulia Levteri. They got married in 1936.

Vitali and Yulia had a daughter named Valeria. She later became the inspiration for a character in his famous book, Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors. When Vitali was just 14 years old, he published his first short story. It was called "Rotten Tree" and appeared in a local children's magazine.

His Career as a Writer

In 1931, Vitali Gubarev started working as a journalist. He wrote for important newspapers like Komsomolskaya Pravda and Pionerskaya Pravda. At one point, he even became the main editor for Pionerskaya Pravda.

He wrote articles about important events. These articles were later turned into a novel and a play.

Famous Fantasy Books

In 1951, Vitali Gubarev wrote his first fantasy novel. It was called Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors. A year later, he turned it into a play. This book became very successful. It is still printed and read today.

In 1963, a movie was made based on the book. It was also called Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors. Vitali Gubarev helped write the movie script. His second wife, actress Tamara Nosova, had a role in the film. The movie was named "Best children's film of 1963." The title "kingdom of crooked mirrors" even became a popular saying.

Vitali Gubarev wrote other popular fantasy books too. These include a funny story called The Three on Island (1959). This book was later made into a cartoon in 1986. He also wrote a children's science fiction novel, Adventure to the Morning Star (1961). Another fairy tale was In the Far Far Away Kingdom (1970). This story also became a movie.

Vitali Gubarev received the Order of the Badge of Honour twice for his work. He passed away in 1981 from a heart attack. He was 69 years old. Vitali Gubarev was buried in Vagankovo Cemetery in Moscow.
