He started writing when he was quite young. By the age of 25, he had already written six books! Some of his early works were influenced by the political ideas of the time, which he later disagreed with. Many experts say his real writing career began in 1935. In 1944, he wrote Gli anni perduti, which means "The Lost Years." This book made fun of Benito Mussolini's huge desire for power. Later, in 1946, he wrote Vecchio con gli stivali ("Old Man in Boots"). This was a funny short story about the challenges Italy faced during a difficult political period. This story won an award and was even made into a successful movie called Difficult Years.
In 1950, Brancati won the Bagutta Prize for another well-known novel, Il bell'Antonio ("The Handsome Antonio"). He also helped write for a cultural magazine called Omnibus.
