Vladimir Andreyevich Uspensky (born November 27, 1930 – died June 27, 2018) was a very smart Russian scientist. He was a mathematician, which means he studied numbers and patterns. He was also a linguist, someone who studies languages. Uspensky wrote many important papers about how math and language work together. He also wrote personal stories about his life. He helped change how language was taught in Russia.

His Education and Teaching
Vladimir Uspensky finished his studies in 1952. He graduated from the Moscow State University, which is a very famous school. He learned from a great teacher named Andrey Kolmogorov.
Later, Uspensky became a leader at the university. He was in charge of the math logic and computer science department. He also helped start a new part of the language department. This part focused on how language is built, like a structure. He taught students there too.
His Books and Awards
Uspensky wrote many books and over 100 research papers. These papers shared his new ideas with other scientists. He also helped 25 students earn their first science degrees. Four of his students even earned higher doctor degrees.
In 2010, one of his books won a special award. The book was called "The Apology of Mathematics." It won the "Enlightener" award for science books. This shows how important his work was. In 1998, he was named a distinguished professor at Moscow State University. This is a high honor for a teacher.
