The Von Mühlenen company has a long and interesting history.
- In 1864, Andreas von Mühlenen started the business in Bern.
- Around 1910, his son Ernst von Mühlenen took over. Ernst's brother, Eugen, also joined the company.
- In 1934, Ernst's son, Walo von Mühlenen, continued the family business.
- Around 1970, the company moved its main operations to Fribourg.
- In 1972, Roger von Mühlenen, Walo's son, became the new leader.
- In 1996, Roger's son, Walo von Mühlenen, took charge.
- In 2006, the Von Mühlenen company was sold to Cremo SA, another dairy company located in Villars-sur-Glâne.
Affineur Walo: A New Chapter
After the sale in 2006, the Von Mühlenen family started a new cheese brand. In 2011, they created Affineur Walo of Mühlenen. This new company is located nearby in Granges Paccot.
Walo von Mühlenen, the cheese expert, continued to make amazing cheeses. At the 2015 World Cheese Awards, his new brand won twelve medals for various cheeses. Among these, he received "Super Gold" awards for his spicy, semi-hard Stärnächäs and Armailii de la Gruyère cheeses.
