The Story of Voortman Cookies
Voortman Cookies started way back in 1951. Two brothers, William and Harry Voortman, who came from the Netherlands, founded the company. They wanted to make great cookies for everyone to enjoy.
Over the years, Voortman grew a lot. By the 2010s, they were making more than 60 different kinds of cookies! This included their famous creme wafers, sugar-free options, and special cookies for holidays.
All of these tasty treats are still made in their original factory in Burlington, Ontario. More than 200 people work there full-time to bake and package the cookies. These cookies then travel across North America thanks to over 500 independent distributors. In 2015, Voortman's cookie sales were over $100 million!
Changes and New Owners
In 2015, a company called Swander Pace Capital bought most of Voortman Cookies. Harry Voortman, one of the founders, stepped back from running the company every day. However, he stayed on the board of directors to help guide the company.
A big change happened in 2017. Voortman decided to make their cookies even better for you. They removed all artificial colors, artificial flavors, and high-fructose corn syrup from their recipes. This meant their cookies became more natural.
Then, in 2019, another big cookie company, Hostess Brands, bought Voortman. Hostess Brands is known for treats like Twinkies. This deal was completed in January 2020.
Healthier Choices for Cookies
Voortman Cookies has been a leader in making healthier choices. In 2003, they announced a big step. They stopped using trans fats in all their cookies. This was a very important move for a food company.
Voortman was the first Canadian food company to do this. They were also one of the first in North America to remove trans fats from their products sold in stores. This showed their commitment to making cookies that taste good and are better for you.
