Voortman Cookies Limited is a Canadian company that makes and sells delicious cookies. They are based in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. You can find Voortman cookies in stores across Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico, and in more than 70 other countries around the world!
The company has changed owners a few times. In 2023, a company called Smucker bought Voortman. Then, in October 2024, Smucker sold Voortman to Second Nature Brands, a company from Michigan.
The Story of Voortman Cookies
Voortman Cookies was started in 1951 by two brothers, William and Harry Voortman. They were immigrants from the Netherlands.
In the 2010s, Voortman Cookies made over 60 different kinds of cookies. This included their famous creme wafers, sugar-free options, and special cookies for holidays. The only place where Voortman cookies are made is still the factory in Burlington, Canada. Over 200 people work there full-time.
In 2015, a company called Swander Pace Capital bought most of Voortman Cookies. Harry Voortman, one of the founders, stopped managing the company every day but stayed on the board of directors.
Changes to the Cookies
In 2017, Voortman changed how their cookies looked and what was in them. They removed all artificial colors, artificial flavors, and high-fructose corn syrup from their recipes. This made their cookies more natural.
In December 2019, another company called Hostess Brands bought Voortman. Later, The J.M. Smucker Company bought Hostess Brands, which meant they also owned Voortman.
As of December 2024, Voortman Cookies is now owned by Second Nature Brands.
No Trans Fats!
In 2003, Voortman Cookies made an important announcement. They said they would no longer use trans fats in their cookies. This was a big deal! Voortman Cookies was the first food company in Canada, and one of the first in North America, to stop using trans fats in their products sold in stores. This was a step towards healthier snacks.
