Vuk's Story: A Young Fox's Adventure
Vuk's Early Life
Vuk and his brothers and sisters were born near a pond in spring. Their parents, Kag and Iny, hunted constantly. They needed a lot of food to feed their growing family. One day, a human known as the Ranger found their home. He sent dogs to hunt the foxes. These foxes had been taking food from nearby farms.
Sadly, Vuk's parents could only save one of their children. They managed to leave Vuk safely by the pond.
Learning the Ways of the Wild
Soon, a frightened Vuk was found by his uncle, Karak. Karak took the little fox under his wing. He brought Vuk to his cave hidden in the cliffs. There, Karak taught Vuk everything about living in the forest. Vuk learned very quickly. He soon became one of the smartest foxes in the whole wood.
Vuk also learned that the Ranger, a "Smooth-skin" human, was responsible for his parents' deaths. Vuk planned to get revenge on him.
A Clever Plan and New Challenges
Vuk visited the Ranger's house one day. To his surprise, he found his sister there. She had survived and was kept in a cage. Karak and Vuk worked together to help her escape. She then joined them and other wild animals in the forest.
Later, during harvest time, the foxes faced danger. Swallows and other birds accidentally gave away their hiding spots. Only Vuk's quick thinking and cleverness saved them. But during the hunting season, Karak was shot by a hunter. Only Vuk and his sister returned to live in Karak's cave alone.
Finding a New Family
Winter arrived, and both Vuk and his sister felt the need to find partners. Vuk's sister was the first to find a mate. She went to live with him in a new home. Then, Vuk had to fight another fox. He won a beautiful vixen (female fox) named Csele. With Csele, the cycle of love and life began again for Vuk.
