Vytautas Kernagis (born May 19, 1951 – died March 15, 2008) was a famous Lithuanian singer, songwriter, and actor. He was also a director and a TV presenter. Many people see him as the person who started the "sung poetry" style in Lithuania.

Who Was Vytautas Kernagis?

Vytautas Kernagis was born into a family of actors. His parents were Aleksandras Kernagis and Gražina Kernagienė. He went to the M.K.Čiurlionis school for a few years. Later, he studied at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and finished in 1973.

His Music Career

Vytautas Kernagis was part of some of the first big rock bands in Lithuania. He played with Aisčiai from 1966 to 1968. Then, he joined Rupūs miltai from 1969 to 1972.

In 1978, he released his first album of sung poetry. This was a new and popular style of music. He also took part in many important musical projects. These included the first Lithuanian rock opera, Devil's Bride. He was also in the first Lithuanian musical, Ugnies medžioklė su varovais. He even helped create the first musical for a puppet theatre, called Šokantis ir dainuojantis mergaitės vieversėlis.

Vytautas on TV

Besides music, Vytautas Kernagis was also a well-known TV star. He hosted the first season of the popular TV show Žvaigždžių duetai in 2007.

Sadly, Vytautas Kernagis passed away on March 15, 2008. He had been battling gastric cancer. He was buried in the Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius.
