Who is Väinämöinen?
Väinämöinen is one of the main characters in the Kalevala. This is Finland's national epic poem. He is often shown as an old, wise man with a long beard. He carries a kantele, which is a type of Finnish harp.
His Amazing Birth
Väinämöinen's birth story is very special. He was born before the Earth was even made! His mother was Ilmatar, the goddess of the air. She became pregnant from the water and wind. She carried Väinämöinen for 30 years.
One day, a bird called Sotka made a nest on Ilmatar's knee. The bird laid seven eggs there. Six eggs were made of iron, and one was pure gold. The eggs became very hot and burned Ilmatar's knee. She moved her knee, and the eggs fell out.
When the eggs broke, they formed the world. From the pieces came the Earth, the sky, the stars, the Sun, and the Moon. After this, Väinämöinen was finally born. He was born as a grown man, ready for his adventures.

Väinämöinen's greatest power was his voice. His songs were not just music. They were powerful magic spells. He could create things with his songs. He could also change the world around him.
