History of Wagner's Block
How Marshall Wagner Built It
Marshall V. Wagner came to Marshall in 1863. He was only 18 years old and had no money. He started working in a store. Then, he began studying law with a local lawyer. By 1870, he had saved enough money to build a large commercial building. This building is now known as Wagner's Block.
Designing and Finishing the Building
Wagner hired a famous architect named John Mills Van Osdel. Van Osdel was from Chicago. He designed this impressive building. Construction was finished in 1871.
What the Building Was Used For
For many years, Wagner's Block was a busy place. The first floor had different shops and businesses. Marshall Wagner's own insurance office was on the second floor. The third floor had a large room. This room was used as a ballroom or an auditorium for events. Marshall Wagner passed away in 1891.
What Wagner's Block Looks Like
Wagner's Block is a three-story building. It is built in a style called Second Empire. This style often includes a special roof called a mansard roof.
Key Features of the Building
The building has a very detailed front. It is made of cast iron and limestone. The mansard roof is covered with slate. It has unique oval-shaped windows. On the second and third floors, the windows are special. They have columns on each side. These columns support decorative covers above the windows.
